The Escort X50 and the Beltronics RX65 are both on the lower end of the five that we would be looking to analyze.

Both of these devices have a relatively high rate of false alarms and they can keep your mind buzzing all day long if you keep driving in the city, so much so that you’d be forced to reduce the level of sensitivity or turn the unit off completely.

Of course, this defeats the purpose of owning a radar detector in the first place.

I have read in a lot of reviews that cheaper models don’t last much longer than a year but since I haven’t used them personally well, it’s hard for me to say.

However, the customer service was not entirely satisfying either. They were a bit rude or unhelpful, and you will find that the best radar detectors have equally impressive customer service departments.

I want to make special mention concerning the heating problems of the X50. If you live in a location that has an average temperature of about 100F or so, avoid buying this model. It gets really hot.

An upgrade to this was the Valentine One. Now, the Valentine One or VI as it otherwise known is certainly better than both these models in sensitivity; that is something worth noting.

Also, the directional feature is cool, if not a little distracting at times. The Valentine had a better range too, no doubt about that.

The big breakthrough is that this model is very durable. It would last well more than a year (general consensus) and can go for more than 10 years at a stretch.  The laser detector is a big breakthrough too.

However, the customer service was not up to the mark here either.

The Valentine too had issues with false alarms, but nowhere near the amount that the cheaper Beltronics models offer.

Valentine One – is it worth the price?

They also lacked the GPS functionality you should know that the firmware updates aren’t free unlike the Beltronics line. Having said that, the fact that you have to pay for Valentine updates sort of signifies that they are better and more important.

It is difficult to say with any confidence though what the best radar detector is, because everyone has different requirements and bank balances. The V1 is certainly up there in terms of expensive radar detectors.

Something like the Beltronics GX65 (pictured right) is good too, and slightly cheaper than the 9500ix or equivalent.

The frustrating thing is that the 2 aforementioned models sorely lack in the window mount department. However there are ways around this if you buy through Amazon and dig around the customer reviews for hints and tips.

Both of them have the GPS lockout capability (which is a BIG relief to not hear those alarms go off whenever they go off – what a relief!).

The 9500ix one though had an auto learning mode, which would be very useful for non tech guys.

The sensitivity of this one is certainly better and it seemed to pick up the presence of a speed trap 1 or 2 seconds earlier than most. Definitely consider this as one of the best radar detectors!
